Investigation Comment:
I visited all application fields during a two day sampling event conducted by EPA, Region 6 on April 15 and April 16, 2014. During my visit I did not notice any odor related to the swine operation at those fields. Additionally, on May 12, 2014, I did not notice any odor related to the swine operation while looking at Fields 6 and 7. The odor was not apparent during either visit until I began driving up the driveway toward the facility. Areas of Big Creek, Dry Creek, and an unnamed tributary to the Buffalo River were visited to assess any potential water quality issues. Every location we visited did not have an odor with the exception of the Buffalo River location where leaves were decaying. I did not note any dead fish or crawfish and saw numerous minnows and snails. Areas where there was little to no flow contained algae that appeared decayed and was floating on the waters surface, algae formation on the rocks. Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.), pH, and Temperature (Celsius) readings were taken. In Big Creek D.O. readings ranged from 9.07 to 10.09; pH readings ranged from 7.47 to 8.04; and, temperature readings ranged from 17.4 to 19.6. The readings taken at the unnamed tributary to the Buffalo River were 6.69 (D.O), 7.72 (pH), and 18.1 (Temp). Algae frowth appears to be naturally occurring within the watershed and no further action is required at this time; however, the Department will continue to monitor the facility and the surrounding area. Description Comment:
Canoed Mt. Judea on April 17, 2014 at 1300 hours and noted poor air quality from C&H Hog Farm between C&H Hog Farm and the school; noted some dead fish and a crawfish down from the USGS gauging station located on Big Creek; water quality of Big Creek is deteriorating to the point of being a primary contact public hazard; the pool in Big Creek below dry creek confluence has a foul odor and poor clarity; pool below application Field 5 has black colored springs flowing into it and is visually impaired; and, the swimming hole on Big Creek upstream of the low water bridge on CR 267 is visually impaired and kids should not be swimming in the creek.
