Investigation Comment:
On May 2, 2017 I conducted an investigation of C&H Hog Farms, Inc. due to the above referenced complaint. During the investigation water conditions at Big Creek and the unnamed tributary leading to Big Creek were observed. Water conditions were clear and had no evidence of receiving a discharge of wastewater from the facility. I walked around each wastewater pond and directly below to a monitoring station. There was no evidence wastewater had discharged from either pond, or that the ponds were leaking or compromised. Three pump trucks were removing wastewater from Pond 1 and according to Mr. Henson, the trucks were land applying the wastewater onto Field 15. From residue formed on the inside of Pond 1 the pond level had dropped 12-15 inches due to pumping activities. Pond 2 had approximately 2-3 feet of freeboard at the lowest point but was approximately 3-6 inches above the Must Pumpdown Mark. In a telephone conversation with Mr. Henson on May 10, 2017 he indicated Pond 2 is now approximately 12-18 inches below the Must Pumpdown Mark and will submit photodocumentation confirming Pond 2 is below the mark. Description Comment:
This is not so much a complaint as a request to check the C&H pond levels following this weekend's rain event. If the ponds are overtopped, erosion could cause a failure of the containment berms. If there is a problem, it is better to catch it early on. If you would respond to me on this i'd much appreciate it. Thanks Brian Thompson.
