The
2000 White River Basin Forum brought together a wide range of stakeholders committed
to improving water quality in the upper White River Basin. The Forum was developed
after environmental protection agencies from Missouri and Arkansas agreed to meet
annually to plan, develop and implement cooperative efforts to address water quality
concerns in the basin.
This year’s forum included a general meeting where speakers provided
overviews of current water quality trends and cooperative efforts in the basin,
discussed high-interest issues, and examined lessons learned from other watersheds.
At an event called the Watershed Resource Toolbox, attendees saw
displays that showcase water quality projects, research and programs under way in
the basin. They could chat with agency representatives, citizens, groups and educators
with interest and expertise in water quality issues as they enjoyed a delicious
catfish dinner, courtesy of the City of Mountain Home and the Mountain Home Chamber
of Commerce.
The next morning, a technical papers session examined current scientific
work in the White River Basin at McMullin Lecture Room, Dryer Hall on the Arkansas
State University Mountain Home campus.
Meanwhile, demonstrating the states’ commitments to the principles
of the 1999 cooperative agreement, leaders of Arkansas and Missouri environmental
agencies met to plan for interstate efforts to protect water quality in the White
River basin.
