CITY’S RECYCLING EFFORTS TO BE FOCUS OF GREEN BAG LUNCH

The City of Fayetteville’s efforts to boost recycling will be the focus of the next Putting Green to Work lunch set for June 18 at the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, 123 W. Mountain St., starting at 11:30 a.m.
Fayetteville received this year’s Arkansas Environmental Stewardship Award from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). The city, which had been a finalist five times for the award, won for its “Recycle Something” educational and marketing program designed to increase recycling by city residents and businesses. The effort, promoted through local advertisements and public presentations and displays, includes financial incentives for the use of smaller trash receptacles and encourages more recycling. In 2014 the city saved more than $213,000 in landfill costs, while earning more than $598,000 through the sale of compost generated from yard waste collections.
Commonly called the “ENVY,” the award was established in 2005 by ADEQ to recognize a major contribution by an individual or organization for efforts to enhance and protect Arkansas’ natural resources.
The Putting Green to Work series, created by ADEQ in partnership with Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions, features businesses and organizations that have excelled in sustainable practices. Its purpose is to help industry leaders learn from each other how to save energy, prevent pollution and conserve resources while increasing profits.
Admission to the presentation is free, but registration is required to ensure adequate seating. Attendees bring their own lunches. To register, contact Audree Miller at 501-682-0015 or email miller@adeq.state.ar.us by 4 p.m. June 17.
