ADEQ Hosts Career Tour for Maumelle Students

NORTH LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) recently hosted a career tour for students from Maumelle High School. The visit was part of an education program offered through the Maumelle Chamber of Commerce which aims to demonstrate to students various careers available post-graduation.

ADEQ Environmental Program Coordinator Erika Droke stated:
“This program presents an excellent opportunity for young adults to explore the possibilities opened to them through higher education and specialized training. Arkansas’s agencies employ people from all backgrounds—scientists, artists, mathematicians, attorneys, historians, foresters, and even aircraft pilots—there truly is a place in public service to complement any interest or talent a person has.”

The students touring ADEQ spoke with technicians in the laboratory, where samples of soil, water, and air from across the state are processed. Information technology staff provided students with a tech-heavy preview of all the aspects of managing computers for ADEQ, including staff technical support, website and mobile application development, and security issues. Students also learned about ADEQ’s “green” building and grounds, the many job types behind its construction and maintenance, and the diverse spectrum of employment available within state departments.

Each year, ADEQ hosts several student groups for environmental activities and educational tours at the North Little Rock headquarters. For more information about educational and building tour opportunities, contact Erika Droke at 501.682.0022 or droke@adeq.state.ar.us.
