Howard County and City of Arkadelphia Receive Asbestos Abatement Grants

NORTH LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality’s (ADEQ) Director Becky Keogh will present checks for asbestos abatement grants to the City of Arkadelphia and to Howard County on June 28, 2017. The presentation for Howard County will take place at 10:15 a.m. at the Howard County Courthouse in Nashville, Arkansas. At 1:30 p.m. the City of Arkadelphia will receive their grant during a presentation at the former Clark County Hospital at 1420 Pine Street in Arkadelphia.

Howard County will be awarded $13,500 for asbestos abatement activities at the former Howard County Hospital. The City of Arkadelphia will be awarded $92,503 for asbestos abatement activities at the former Clark County Hospital.

ADEQ’s asbestos abatement grant program was created to provide funding assistance to eligible cities and counties for the assessment, stabilization, and abatement activities for an eligible structure. Projects that are selected to be funded must engage in the removal of friable asbestos materials from a city or county owned structure that has unexpectedly collapsed, is at imminent risk of collapsing, or has failed in its structural integrity. ADEQ has $150,000 available to award to asbestos abatement projects each fiscal year.
